Argentina Takes Action Against Oil Companies Operating in Falkland Islands

Earlier this month an Argentine Federal Judge ordered that the assets of foreign oil companies exploring and drilling in the area of the Falkland Islands, be seized.  Judge Lilian Herraez also ordered the impounding of ships belonging to these  oil companies.

Bishop of Rome in Brazil for World Youth Day

Pope Francis arrived in Brazil on Monday to very large crowds, enthusiastic about his participation. This is his first trip abroad. The first International World Youth Day was held in Buenos Aires in 1987. The first event took place in Rome in 1986.

Belgium Has A New King

On Sunday, July 21, 2013 King Albert abdicated and was replaced by his son, the new King Phillippe I . No foreign royals were present as King Albert had only announced his intentions a few weeks before. There was little time for elaborate preparations, though there was a parade as Sunday was National Day in Belgium. The new king, like his father, is a strong supporter of the European Union. The first Belgian king ascended the throne on July 21, 1831.

Queen Elizabeth II Celebrates Diamond Jubilee

Queen Elizabeth ascended the throne of the United Kingdom the Sixth of February 1952 upon the death of her father, King George VI.  On Monday February 6, 2012 there was a forty-one gun salute in the Hyde Park section of London by the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery to inaugurate the 60th Anniversary celebrations which will continue throughout 2012.
